Message from the Leadership Team
Happy New Year from your Leadership Team!
Please remember that there is no school on Monday, Jan. 8. We look forward to our first day back on Tuesday, Jan. 9. As we enter the second half of the school year, it’s a time to reflect on the current as well as look forward and plan for the upcoming semester.
End of Semester Jan. 30
Our semester ends on Jan. 30. If you have any questions or concerns about how your learner is doing, please be sure to contact your facilitator. They are your learner’s first point of contact, and can best assist with helping your child be successful.
MAP Assessments
During the month of January, learners will take MAP assessments for the second time this year. The MAP measures an individual learner’s academic level and growth — and uses the resulting data to better inform facilitators about specific areas to address. They also help us better understand overall class needs. The aim of the MAP is to help your learners now, while we are currently in session. With all of this in mind, it’s important for learners to try their best on these assessments. Facilitators have such conversations with learners prior to their testing window. We’d also ask for your help in conveying the message on the importance to give one’s best effort while taking the MAP assessments.
Each grade level has been assigned a week to take these assessments. They are as follows:
- Jan. 9-12 – Team 4/5
- Jan. 12-16 – Middle School Team
- Jan. 22-26 – Team 2/3
- Jan. 29-February 2 – Team K/1
- Jan. 30 and Feb. 1 – Upper School with makeups on Feb. 2
- Please note on these days, Upper School will have a modified schedule.
Class of 2018 Pride
We’re very excited that our seniors our beginning to be accepted to some of the colleges to which they’ve applied. Please scroll down to see where some of them are thinking about going. We still have three more months to go, and we’re looking forward to hearing back from more!
Taking Care of Our Planet = Reusable Water Bottles
After taking count of the amount of plastic cups (500+) our school uses daily in the CAFE, we realized that we could do better as a school in regards to conservation. We could be better at taking care of our planet. In this effort, we are asking our learners and families to help us in this by bringing reusable water bottles rather than us continuing to use plastic cups, which are harmful to our environment. This way, our learners can refill their bottles in the CAFE and at the water fountains, and also practice two valuable skills. One: using resources wisely. Two: being responsible for their belongings.
We are replacing the outside fountain with a new water bottle/refillable one. We currently have two of these installed on campus (in upper school and on the second floor of the lower school.) Learners may use CAFE water, too. In the meantime, if your learner forgets her refillable bottle, the CAFE can provide a paper cup. We hope in January to have 100 percent of our learners, families and staff on board. Finally, water bottles will also be available for a nominal price when we return.
#US4ADay and Upper School Information Night
On Thursday, Jan. 18, our 8th graders will be participating in #US4ADAY. During this time they will experience our Upper School as learners. They will attend academic classes, design tech classes (SCVi style electives,) advisory classes, and meet with a panel of seniors discussing the college application process. On that evening from 6:30 to 8:30, please join us for Upper School Information Night. This is also open to all of our families who want to know more about our upper school. We will be highlighting the following: academics, college and career information, IB Program information, clubs, advisory, Ambassador Council and sports. We look forward to this annual event. Please join #US4ADAY.
Reenrollment for 2018-19 Academic Year
Finally, January marks our re-enrollment period. It’s a time for us to reserve space for all families currently attending SCVi for the 2018-2019 academic year. We will be sending out our annual re-enrollment survey very soon. It’s of vital importance for families to complete this survey ASAP, because our annual enrollment lottery is in February. Knowing your plans now helps us better plan for the future.
We appreciate hearing from our families. You can reach your SCVi Leadership Team, by emailing us at leadership@scvi-k12.org.
