7 Habits

Habit 7 is Renewal.

Sharpening the saw is what a lumberjack must do in order to cut wood efficiently and effectively. The same applies to the scissors of the seamstress, the paintbrushes of the painter, and the tools of the craftsman. Studying this habit brings to mind the story of the goose and the golden eggs. Just as taking care of the goose will ensure the continued yield of golden eggs, so also taking care of ourselves is an investment. It takes time, planning, and commitment.

To maintain and increase our effectiveness, we must renew ourselves in body, heart, mind, and soul. This improves our capacity, builds stronger relationships, and allows for continuous improvement. Building greater reserves builds the strength we need for those hard moments when we need to show the grit, determination, and patience that are the hallmarks of a strong character.

Suggested Activity: Talk with your learner about the importance of taking care of him/herself. On a piece of paper make four columns and list body, heart, mind, and soul on the top of each column. Then brainstorm things that would renew your child in those four areas. Some suggestions for body are exercising, preparing a healthy meal, and taking a nap. Ways to renew your heart might include spending time with family and friends, reading a good book, writing in a journal, and/or volunteering to do something that benefits someone else. Ways to renew the mind might include studying something you are passionate about, learning a new language, reading, and/or completing puzzles. Some ideas to renew the soul might involve spending time in nature, listening to good music, observing art, and practicing religious disciplines. Have your child choose at least one item from each column to focus on this week.
